I don't understand this game at all. The art-style is incredible and it has one of the most unique and somewhat detailed and lovingly crafted worlds I've seen in a game.

But whose job was it to create the characters and their personalities? Literally every person you come across in this game is a flat out anti-social, narcissistic, greedy, outright corrupt PoS.

I've been playing for 5½ hours and I haven't found a single character I like. John is a mute and Sam is overly childish too.

I can see why this game barely passed a 50% positive rating. How do you make something so pretty and make the characters so visually diverse, but crash so hard on the writing. The idle chatter you have to experience too when talking to an NPC outside of actually HAVING to talk to them, is also simply bland and doesn't reveal anything about the character you're talking to or world around you.

Let's sum this up right.

Kids = All bullies
Parents = Worse than their kids
Diggers = Lazy disloyal pricks
Mayor = Corrupt douche
Principal = Psycho
All else = Queer weirdos or literally just robots

No wonder this world is quote "dying". Who would want to reproduce with these weirdos...

What a waste... at least the game is pretty.

Yes, dialogue is poopy but the gameplay is disgusting. None of it is fun, engaging, or challenging. I've been a huge MMO/RPG fan for near three decades now, and I put this down years ago after single digit hours and never picked it back up. Saw in my library today and was a bit relieved others felt the same way and I wasn't missing some core component. Nope, just overrated tr4sh what's n3w in the v1d30 g4m3 w0rlDDDD

Don't worry, the characters don't get any better as you go along, even the characters you are supposed to like are relegated to repeating catchphrases and having nothing positive to say about anything but food, and John cooking food.

Really? I have to say, I'm knee-deep in chapter 3 and I can't see this at all. Compared to so many popular edgy games today, it's almost amazing how friendly everyone is in this game. The only one I agree with is the mayor and one of the diggers (Yohn), but they're villains. They're SUPPOSED to be awful.

As for John and Sam, silent protagonists are common and I can't conceive why anyone wouldn't like Sam.

But... I guess this game's reviews and popularity aren't great, as you say, so your view must be the majority. A real shame for me. This is honestly one of my favourite games.

The writing is just sub-par random nonsense strung together based on the developers whims. They figured that all the people in the pit at the start should act like trash to everyone so you wouldn't mind leaving, they made the chapter two people two faced tsunderes so you would potentially get attached to them in the five minutes you knew them, and they made the majority of the chapter three people obnoxious random tropes just so they would be quirky. It all just comes off as half baked and in need of an editing pass, and it only gets worse later when it becomes evident that the developers never decided what the story of the game actually was.
