i went through the workshop and hit "Subscribe" to a bunch of maps (both in regular steam, and through the in-game Workshop option), but they're not showing up in-game?

all i can see are the daily picks. those work properly; i can click on one and it will load and i can play it. (though none have preview images, if those are supposed to be there.)

do i need a special firewall setting?

This seems like a error of some kind.

Try to verify game files on steam. Restart steam, restart your PC. Add exception to firewall for the game, or to antivirus. Reinstall steam as the last option also.
