ChickenStrip and coldcrow are pretty much both correct here.

To my knowledge there is three main difficulties of FFIV. You have the Original FF4j and FF2us. There's a FF4j easytype as mentioned that I'm not terribly familiar with. But there is also the FFIV DS version that scales up the difficulty even more than the original.

Case in point in the DS version, the Witches on the moon like to use Bolt 3 which can do single target damage of around 2500-4000 which makes them extremely dangerous when you first encounter them (most characters have around 1000-2000 health. They can use it as a multitarget attack as well though it does significantly less damage. In all other versions, they use Bolt 2 (or LIT2). Which does around a few hundred damage, making them a heck of a lot easier.

This is only one part of the DS version that has such a difference, I'm using it to illustrate a stark difference. The game on the DS is significantly harder in all places.

Its even harder in the beginning with Cecil and Kain. Now this is where the idea they are overleveled comes into play. Yes, this is correct. Both start at level 10 and the area around Baron is tuned for a party of level 1s. While they can take 'some' damage in the DS version, it is negligible even in that version.

Its a story element essentially. You're not playing as some random adventurers looking to make their name in the world. You're playing as Dark Knight Cecil, Captain of the Redwings, and Dragoon Kain Captain of the Dragoons. They are seasoned fighters. Even their classes are Dark Knight and Dragoon.. not Fighter/Warrior. Those were advanced classes in previous games (and even later ones).

There is technically another difficulty, based on the DS version to make it not so hard (it is actually kinda brutal if you're not a avid player of FFIV). That was rebranded as Normal Difficulty and the original was called 'Hard' for the 3d version based on it here on Steam.

However from what I've read, they made the Pixel Remaster either as easy as the FF2us version, or even easier. IMO.. you want to play the FF4j as your first play through. That is if you're not new to jRPGs. And if you're a fan of FFIV and have played through that version.. then the DS version or the 3D version on Steam on Hard will be a treat.

It was only that easy in "EasyType" JP release, which the US FF2 release is based upon. The original JP FF4 is much harder (enemies do more dmg and have more AGL).

This is wrong. Those weren't the changes, and there's a ton of urban legends about the English FF2 that are also wrong.

You can look at any footage from any 2D version of the game-- Cecil and Kain are just overleveled and tanky for that first segment of the game.

I stand corrected, "easytype" was more of a QoL release, with little changes in terms of difficulty.
FF2 US is still significantly easier than FF4. You already see it when fighting imps, which will act in FF4, but not in FF2 if you fight normally.

That's how the game was in the original. He'll take more damage later. But enemies in this game are weak in general. It's an easy game.
