If you haven't played for a while and your character's gone try this

For the people returning to the game after being away for 4+months and wondering where your characters are, save data was moved from a central server to local saves back in December. There has been an option in the game since then to migrate your save data. However, that option has mysteriously disappeared in this week's update.

If you are technically inclined and want to download last week's version of the game to try to do a save data migration, you can follow these steps to do so.

NOTE: Hopefully this will not be necessary for long and the devs will restore some method of migrating data. So if you are not comfortable trying to do this - or simply dont want to be bothered - just wait for news from them on the matter.

If you have played since the decentralization patch in December, this guide is not for you. Following these steps will revert your save to how it was before decentralization.

1. Open Steam console: steam://open/console

2. Run this command in the console:
download_depot 1149460 1149461 4892236385592536102

Wait for the download to complete. There will be no indication of progress, but it will take a while as it is downloading the full game. Once complete, it will print a line like the following:
Depot download complete : "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\content\app_1149460\depot_1149461" (435 files, manifest 4892236385592536102)

3. Go to the location it says it downloaded to. In that folder, you should see Icarus.exe. Do not run the exe directly because it will not be connected to your Steam account. You cannot migrate data if the game is not connected to Steam properly.

4. Make a new text file in this directory and name it RunIcarus.bat. Inside this file, add the following:
@echo off
set SteamClientLaunch=1
set SteamEnv=1
set SteamAppId=1149460
set SteamGameId=1149460
set SteamAppUser=YOUR_ACCOUNT_NAME
set SteamUser=YOUR_ACCOUNT_NAME
set STEAMID=YOUR_STEAM_ID
start Icarus.exe

Replace YOUR_ACCOUNT_NAME (in both places) with your Steam account name. This is the name you log into Steam with, not the one that is displayed in the Steam client. Replace YOUR_STEAM_ID with your SteamID64 which you can lookup at https://www.steamidfinder.com/

5. Save the file, then run RunIcarus.bat to start the game. If the game doesn't start, then you probably have not given the file the proper .bat extension. Check your folder view options and make sure "File Name Extensions" is enabled so that you can see and change the extension to .bat.

6. Once the game is running, you should then be able to use the "Force Data Migration" button at the bottom of the main menu to migrate your save data.

If you get an error like "Failed to get profile", then you probably either entered your Steam details incorrectly, or you ran Icarus.exe instead of RunIcarus.bat. Double check steps 4 and 5 above.

If you get a different migration error, most likely you just need to try to migrate again, or possibly wait a bit. The server is not always responsive.

Once migration is complete, run the latest version of the game and check that your characters are there. If so, then feel free to delete the old version you downloaded to free up disk space.

thanks, it took me like 5 or 6 tries and a whole day of waiting to get the download to complete successfully but i suspect the crappy state of Australian internet is at fault there.

over all im not super happy about the process but i have had worse experiences.
when the makers of worlds adrift decided to shut down their servers we were told no they won't release the server side files needed to host our own servers, the games dead end of story, we get nothing.
when black desert online changed owners and switched to the new companies servers we were given like a month or two to contact them to have our accounts transferred and when i missed that i was told i could buy the game again and start a new character.

also not sure why the devs haven't made this version a beta mode like they did for the centralised version, it would simplify the whole thing but maybe im missing something technical.

Thank you very much for the instructions, everything worked.
Well thank you.

Only recommendation at this point is to go to the official Discord and look for help there.

Same issue here, Get profile timing out. And I joined the official Discord, any hints as to WHERE there to find help? #tech-support appears to be archived

There's an active tech-support channel under the "Station Quarters" section

Bump. When migrating I am getting "character timed out", and I have correctly written down the information required in the .bat file...

Does this work-around still work, and if yes: Does it still work even if you've already updated the game and started it?

p.s: some background information, dont know if it makes a difference...
I havent played this game about about a year, and my steam account is from 2004.

If it's no longer working, I recommend going to the official Discord and ask there. I just copied the info here for everyone having the issue. :(
