My buddy and I are picking this up.. should we wait.. I can't believe it has mixed reviews it looks good on streams..

I'd get it if that's your only concern. It's really enjoyable, just know that you only have a very limited number of points until the devs address this issue. You still get blueprints after the talent points stop so while an inconvenience, it's not game breaking. Just my opinion but hope it helps.

Keep in mind that it is essentially an Early Access title; there are still some bugs and balance issues, and items and mechanisms are still periodically getting added or tweaked.

Also keep in mind the game's peculiar gimmicks: in particular, your on-planet progress is wiped at the end of every mission, and missions have a real-time deadline and you will lose your character if you don't evacuate in time.

If you like the idea of short-session, self-contained multiplayer missions and are willing to work with the occasional oddity or frustration and some pretty OP wildlife, it can be a lot of fun. If you like the sense of progression that comes from building up a base and a stockpile of resources, or if you may not always have enough free time to finish missions before they expire, you may enjoy it less.

As long as you go into it knowing what its about. A lot of people think its a persistent sandbox world which it is not. You have limited real life days or hours to finish a drop or your guy dies permanently. You can punch out of a drop early if you think you may not finish in time which is nice. I am on my second character because my first one was a learning experience on what not to do.

they're working on a respec system for talents, they just don't want it to make choices inconsequential.
Currently talent points cap at level 40 for a total of 48 points, it allows you tp specialise into a "tree" and pad things out in a couple of places for QoL, so if you're playing exclusively solo, you can put most of your points into the Solo tree, but avoid it if you regularly play with friends as the solo tree is locked in team play, better to co ordinate with your team mate/s on who'll be in charge of what eg: Gatherer, hunter, builder, defence and work from there.
Tech points currently continue to accumulate all the way to level 99 (level cap) so you can learn to craft almost everything in game.
There are a number of guides around that can show you how to get the most out of your system and settings if you aren't running a beast of a PC and how to work around FPS issues (the game is set up for nVidia cards more than AMD, but they've added stuff for both and are continuing to work on improvements.
Lots of people on the forums are willing to help with any questions, just ignore the haters, most of them don't even own the game or play it and most expect a life changing experience while running the game on a potato for a PC, or just refuse to listen to advice.
Game can be brutal and has a steep learning curve, best advice there is to have your head on a swivel and don't just charge into anything without looking very carefully first, you Will die.
Bears, Wolves, Boars, Cougars and Polar Bears will kill and eat you many times, Cave Worms will poison you and kill you many times, lol, you'll work out how to deal with this.
Most importantly, watch the timer, it is in Real Life Time and continues to tick down even offline, if it runs out before you can leave the planet / moon, that character is Permanently dead and you will have to level a new one, you keep your currency and workshop stuff, but lose the gear on you and that character.

The game isn't that technical.
You could possibly split up some blueprint choices early like one person focus on building and the other on crafting but mostly you only want to get what you "need" and save the points for the next tech level. At that point you should both have plenty of points anyway.

Early choices like a bed and fire are things you probably both want anyway.

I would suggest living in rocks until level 5 and you open up wood building, thatch is pretty much useless. Save the points for armor and other things early on.

Talent point trees are kind of the same thing... a lot of skill you will both want like extra stamina and health so early choices are fairly default. Solo tree will not work with a friend so do not use points there ... talent points are very limited. Once you have basic stuff covered try to keep some saved for things like making sticks from wood.. or keeping grown crops fresh and split tasks like that if needed or desired. Once clicked the choice is permanent for that character, there is no confirmation. No way to undo a mistake for that character.

If you are playing with a friend DO NOT take ANYTHING in the Solo tree. They are disabled the moment someone else joins your prospect, so it's like you have no talents at all.

Exploration tree I found very handy: anything that boosts movement (you do a LOT of movement around the map), stamina or stamina regen (so you can sprint longer with less breaks). I also took less stamina from jumping and less falling damage.

Why the latter?

If you are running downhill, you can jump, go airborne, and regenerate the stamina while you are in the air, with the right spec. However, you "fall" pretty far, so may take falling damage... unless you spec away from it.

If they don't want to respec they could just give us more fundamental starting blueprints and/or talents and keep the cap at 40. But since we start with more....or perhaps let us choose from a pool of points before we start and then cap at 40 it would give us more freedom in builds.

Dont fear the reviews, jump right in and have fun, game is way more fun playing it with discord chat with friends.

Keep the Patch notes in mind - the respec is being reviewed. Also there is a mod to keep increasing talent points on lvl up currently

The remaining majority will just be suckers looking to rope in more suckers to share the pain of a bad purchasing decision.

If OP had asked if they should buy the game at all or not I would have said not to. Not at this time.

But OP sounds like they already decided to buy the game and were asking about mechanics and if they should wait. So I just answered the question asked.

Wow I mean when I own a game and I'm on a forum I'm honest about what I do/don't like about it. I came here looking for advice. I'e already stated I've seen streamers play it and it looks like the have fun I was just wondering what was up with the reviews and talent spec.. Thanks though.
