I understand the allure of online co-op, but how would that work with this game? Lego games are about collecting everything. Couch co-op has both players playing on the same save file working together to collect the same item.

If you did online co-op, would you be willing to join someone else's game save and help them collect items without getting credit yourself? This would be the equivalent of couch co-op online with multiple players on the same save file, but would mean that someone gets no credit on their own account (unless they redo the exact same thing a second time on their own save file).

If you allowed both accounts to get credit, would the game have to require both players have the exact same collectibles collected and unlocked with the same items remaining? That would be almost impossible to match up with ("Sorry. you two can't pair together because you purchased Wedge, but your friend didn't"). If you allowed both players to get credit, but did not require the same items, you could have an advanced player with unlocked characters helping a new character collect everything on their first play through.

While it would be fun to do some missions with online friends, the collectible part seems like there are too many difficulties to work around. So, it is easier to just leave it as couch co-op, like it has been since the beginning.

I mean, it could simply be that each player see their owns collectible items, other games do that with no problem, each player see their own chests, collectible and whatnot, they each have their own progression, but can complete things together too, that's how many coop games work already.

Yes this game would be so much better with online play, such a shame.
