I still got a savegame from the original ME floating around. So I wonder, can I possibly continue from there in Legendary Edition?

ME2-3 yes, as there is no difference, just new textures. So you can import old saves into next part.

ME1 is a different beast however. It will not work, afaik. But it has legacy bugs (Vernon for example).

If you have ME2 classic, you can import classic ME1 with it and then move the ME2 save to LE2.
