I think both ships and planes can work, with ships you designate routes in a shipping yard, needing to prevent ships from hitting each other in a ever increasing in traffic shipyard, with planes you could have to set up the airstrips and need to designate how planes get on and off the runway while new flights are coming in or leaving, in that version you need to keep the airtraffic from becoming to crowded, perhaps you can only have so many planes waiting in the air or waiting for take off at any point, that or passengers can't wait to long to take off. (honestly I can think of the ship one better then the plane one, as I am fairly sure I played a version of the ship one years ago)

For air traffic, there are many similar games, but what haven't been tried IMO is to setup a hub and spoke airline network using limited resources connecting different airports with different demand levels and different slot restrictions.

Like the others have said, planes would work very differently as they don't have routes to travel on.

On Steam there is Fly Corp. Reasonably similar, with airplanes.

On Apple, there is Pocket Planes, but it's an idle game where you progress slowly over weeks/months.

Sure, why not ships as well...although the 2 current mini games are all about routes, so it isn't clear how the series would work in "non-route" based vehicles.
