What you're asking is the equivalent of learning the skills that takes specialized developers years to learn in college or industry experience in the video game industry who are worth at least 60k a year in salary.

Understand that if you want to learn to make your own avatars you are basically becoming a game developer who specializes in making character models and animations

I failed to ask questions and wasted my own time. Don't beat yourself up over one failed commission, they happen. Just learn for next time and don't make a habit out of it.

If you laser-focus on only the things you need to know to make one thing, you might be able to learn enough in 4-6 weeks, but avatar making won't be it.
Creating avatars involves most of the 3D creation pipeline and it will take at least a year to be proficient with all of it, regardless of which 3D programs you use.

You can create one for free, AFSIK, on ReadyPlayerMe {LINK REMOVED}(https://vrchat.readyplayer.me/) and then connect your VRChat account and upload your model. A few things to keep in mind:
1) You need a VRChat login because you can't connect your ReadyPlayerMe account to VRChat with your Steam acct.
2) It's going to be a basic model.
3) It takes a while for them to upload the model to your VRChat.
I just made mine but I got the:
"We are preparing your avatar! Your avatar will appear in the "Other" list in VRChat and not on their online platform. Due to high demand, it may take up to 10-15 minutes. You can safely close this window now," message.
You can easily create a basic model for free on ReadyPlayerMe. Good luck :)

Also on the VRChat website they link to online avatar creation sites. I can't speak to the other ones because I haven't used them. Sorry for multiple posts instead of one long one. This is a new account and apparently I can't edit my posts.

If you want to make an avatar from scratch you have to learn blender which freaking mystifies me.

If you just want to upload and modify avatars (Which might look janky AF) you have to learn unity.

There's no easy way to do it.
Even us adults get freaking confused.

Understand that if you want to learn to make your own avatars you are basically becoming a game developer who specializes in making character models and animations

Start with converting models in Blender using CATS then putting it into Unity to upload as an avatar. SDK3 is a lot harder to learn than SDK2 but both are cake walks compared to the torture that is learning Blender.

As harsh as they may sound, noone is going to go out of their way to teach you the entire thing as it is a rather long and exhausting process if you have no idea what you are doing.
If you only want to modify/setup already existing models in unity, it is a lot easier and the youtube tutorials should be useful enough.
Creating an avatar from scratch is an entirely different beast though.

It's not easy, but read some books about modeling/blender/etc, first learn, then practice, just study :)
