Look em in the eyes and tell them you love them from the bottom of your heart and then proceed to run to the corner and think about your life choices.

The general vibe of VRChat, at least in my circles, is chill acceptance. As long as you aren't trying to be annoying, as long as you aren't a racist jackass, and as long as you aren't a sex pest, there is space for everyone to coexist.

Treat each lobby as an adventure free of expectations and full of possibilities. Try to match the mood, eg relaxed versus excited, serious versus jockular. Be humble, take in feedback. Treat everyone with respect and kindness. Ignore and block anyone that can't do the same for you.

Most people in VRChat are here to relax and have a nice, leisurely time. As long as you aren't creating emotional labor for someone else to deal with, you will be fine.

And remember that most people are new to a lot of this too. VRC adds some awkwardness and skills to learn. We've all been there. Be generous and lighthearted.

Not having anything to say is fine too. Some of my favorite evenings began with a "Hey, how's it going?" followed by a few hours of mostly listening to other people talk.

Making friends will help. If you have a nice time with someone you have just met, feel free to ask if you can send a friend request. Join friends when you see them on green or blue or in public lobbies. You will develop a rapport over time.

It also helps to seek out spaces with a focus specific activities. Do you like a particular game or movie franchise? There is probably a world filled with people that share the same interest. The same can be said for other hobbies like learning a new language, practicing art, or listening to/performing music.

Being social, and being social in VR in particular, is a skill you can practice. Be yourself but try to step out of your comfort zone a little. Say the first "Hello." Embrace the cringe. Be able to laugh about your mistakes while learning from them. Be active in cultivating what you want to get out of VRChat.

The stakes in VRChat are low. Be honest, be kind, and be generous. People will pick up on your vibe and accept you for who you are.

My advice would be that if you don't feel comfortable talking at first , then you can avoid it and just use your head and hands (I'm assuming you have a VR headset) to point and convey laughter at a joke or shaking your head when something is cringe.
It will be hard but if there are people who are just silent at a mirror , feel free to go up and say hi or ask how's it going. If they don't answer , it's no biggie if they hear you and don't look like they care you can go to a new instance of that world or another.
There's a lot of people who will actively engage with you once they know 1. You have a mic 2. You're not trying to troll or crash anyone.

I know how sometimes it can feel like you're insignificant like no one notices you exist in a lobby but there are just different groups of people out there and you have to hop around worlds to find one that will vibe with you. try to find a cool avatar that might help get you noticed too.

Also no one is gonna socially kill you. Even saying the right things I forget who someone is or they might forget me if we've only met once. It's not that they're forgettable , as a player we meet so many people in VR quickly and easily. Don't worry if chance meetings don't go your way, there's other groups out there I would recommend worrying about instead of someone who might forget you.

if you say the wrong thing you have a magic thing called leaving the world or blocking the other user.
