Best to run yourself a LAN server with ASM than to use single player mode. Then saves and settings are completely separate from the client.

I love wolves, but their lack of saddle armor makes me cross them off the list. Plus you really want a pack, sounds like space is limited. Bears are a very hardy dino and procoptodon or thylo are good..

high lvl raptors are a good noob tame...fast to tame, high speed,bad attack and weight but I have used them to run to my dead body to get my loot in a pinch..they are fast af if you tame a good one am..

You basically need the same amount of free space as the existing game install takes up to patch. If your game is 100GB you need that much free to patch.
